Wirral GS v St Anselms 1st/2nd

In the first games of the season against St Anselms, the Wirral boys started poorly and played fairly poorly in the first half. Not really taking on board the points for the day! But we were to take the lead through a loose ball that fell to Evans to finish well on his reverse stick.

As the second half progressed we sat off and some poor defending down the St Anselms left saw the Saints boy drive into the dee and equalise at the near post. As the second half developed we improved and by attacking wide we created more opportunities. It lead to a well worked corner in which Walker finished after a good injection. It was the first time in which we had won a poor game against St Anselms for a couple of leagues.

As the 2nd team got into action there were some terrible defensive mistakes that lead to a poor first goal past Phil Burgess. But as the side found their feet moved the ball well through the ever improving Ollerhead. We equalised through a great through ball to Farrington who finished with aplomb!

In the second half a strange second goal conceded by Johnstone that just looked like he left the ball to go it from a deflected shot!! Strange. As the pushed forward again the Wirral boys pressed on and Barry scored after three attempts past his old school to equalise. With only 25 seconds left the ball breaked for Ollerhead to drive into the dee at the goalkeeper, to then slip it left to Edge who surely could not miss but he hit the post! Amazing!! Should have been 3-2 but some very good performances from many players pushing for the 1st team.

Wirral GS v Birkenhead School U15's

In the first competitive game for the Wirral U15s at Birkenhead, a bright start saw the Wirral boys on the attack but positional sense at time was letting the Birkenhead side get into the game. After a few corners the Birkenhead team took a lead through a shot that hit Wilkinson on the foot and flew into the net from a corner. As the half progressed we pressed well and attacked positively that lead to a break on the right hand side of the dee. McGilloway fed Gouldson who finished well from five yards out beating the keeper from close range!

The chat at half time was to continue in the same way, but the Birkenhead attacks put alot of pressure the Wirral defenders who's first touch was poor! The final score was not great with a 6-1 scoreline. Plenty to work on but not all bad and with the game on Thurs to see improvements!

A game was played at Calday Grange on Fri 18th Sept between the Wirral GS squad and the Bebington HC (Suppose to be 3rd team) but actually 1st team. Not a great practice for our lads but another 70 mins with preparation for the start of the season!

Wirral GS v Neston HS

The beginning of the season has arrived playing a competitive friendly away against Neston was the location. It was on the afternoon of an early finish for Open Evening. But good preparation and on our arrival at the Rec a chance to warm up and work on some skills.

We looks pretty good and started the game well going forward, keeping possession and creating chances! Only to find that when you hit the ball straight at the keeper he has a chance of saving it. After the first 15 mins had elapsed and chances gone begging, Plimley finished nicely from close range past the keepers left.

But no sooner had that happen, miscommunication and poor passing between Crawford and Walker lead to their centre forward rifling the ball past Smithy in the roof of the net. We continued to push on and further, what could could only be described, as chances that were harder to miss, were missed. We then took the lead through Evans but again a reply from Neston and some silly mistakes was allowing them into the game.

We moved to a half court and looked to counter attack and get our defensive shape and this improved our play, further runs from Lyness lead to chances that were not taken by our forward line. But a optimistic punt forward from Rid saw Evans in the clear who finished smartly. It was not the end of proceedings as Neston levelled following some poor defending, but a ball fired into the dee was deflected in by Wright to win the game for Wirral 4-3.

In the end we started with a win but things need addressing defensively and this is an area we can work on and also the ability to take our chances as it could have been ten!

Training every Friday Lunch

On alternate weeks fellas there will be 1st & 2nd XI training and use of the fitness suite on a Friday. This will be in week A and then the U16 & U15 in week B.

Indoor hockey is a really good way of developing and improving your individual skills and improving your touch.

Wirral Gs v Old Boys XI

In the first meaningful fixture of the season the Wirral GS squad assembled down at the Oval to play against some of last years 1st team. It was a productive game with the chance to see all of the squad play. It was also a chance for the lads to play the new rules!

The 4-1 win saw us get off to a good start with goals from Evans and Riddiough. I apologise but we didn't keep up to date with who else scored. A good overall start and very productive. Neston next!

The start of the 2009/10 season is here and I hope that we can hit the ground running. This week sees all of the new squads begin training and the first game is on Wed 9th Sept against an Old Boys team. The push back is 2.30 and will be a test for the 1stXI squad.

Wed 1st April - Presentation Evening & Curry

I would like to thank all of the players, Mr Cooper, Mr Thomason and Luis for their attendance at the Curry night to have our end of season presentation. It has been a very good season and the presentation of the school colours and half colours shows a real progress and development in school hockey. I wish to contradulate Phil Taylor (1st team player of the season) and Jay Elias (2nd team players of the season) who were voted for by the players.

I hope that we can work hard individually in preperation for the next season with you guys in lower 6th and Yr 11 and I would like to again thank the services shown by Harvey, Taylor, Gawith and Frank who leave us this season.

Wednesday 26th March - Oval

There were 16 goals and flicks that helped to decide the game between the upper and lower sixth mixed sides on a nice day down at the Oval on Wednesday afternoon. Starting at 2.15 the 7 a-side game started and was played on the full pitch bringing to the end the WGS careers of Harvey, Taylor and Frank at the Oval. The game was played very open with chances at both end and lead to an 8-8 draw and therefore a penalty flick competition.

Well done to all players and thank you to Mr Cooper for umpiring.

2nd XI v Denstone College

In the 2nd team game we prepared well and looked confident and the part with an overall fairly young and inexperienced side captained by Gawith.

We started well and with the confidence of Dennis, Wilkinson and attacking play by Ollerhead looked like we cold cause them trouble. A great chance fell to Farrington from Oldham's through ball who amazingly shot wide. We were just a little too nice first half and needed to keep our position and shape. It was a hot day and players were getting tired and so with the use of rolling subs everyone got a good game.

A little bit against the run of play in our attempt to clear from a 16yd hit we presented Denstone with the ball leaving Burgess little chance 1-0. We then had a few chances ourselves and at half time the score was close. As the second half got under way a great chance fell to Spink who has his shot saved and within 30 seconds Denstone had scored on the break. A third suicidal goal was conceded leaving use 3-0 down without doing much wrong. As we pushed for a goal with further chances falling to Farrington, Wilkinson, Dennis and Spink the Denstone boys scored two more making it 5-0.

I would say thou if we had taken our chances and cut out the needless mistakes the game would have been much closer. It was a good day and excellent experience for the boys and overall a good display. There has been a lot of progress made by many of their boys from their basic skills, their confidence and ability within the game.

Wirral v Denstone College 1st

After the usual 1hr 45minute journey down towards Stoke way, we arrived at Denstone College 30strong for the 1st and 2nd team games. After splitting to play on two pitches the 1st team with Mr Cooper started well in a fast open game. Thy took the lead through Lyness and then continued to dominate the game for 15 mins. We then had a further chance that fell to Evans who had his shot amazingly saved by the keeper when it was destined to go in.

The Denstone side came back strongly and missed tackles and corners conceded lead to them scoring 1-1 and then taking the lead 2-1. At that stage we missed more useful opportunities. In the second half it was again very open and could have gone either way but the German short corner specialist scored four to leave the score 5-1.

An overall conclusion they converted we didn't!!

The Year 10 House matches were well attended on a mild evening down at the Oval. The four houses were well represented with a 8 a-side tournament raring to go. The four goalkeepers got kitted up to represent their house, Teanby (Barber) O'Connell (Dodd's) Wise (Lever) and Miller (Hodgson).

We were all set ready to go with Bush and Eastwood umpiring with AJM and the goals set up. We were able to start on time playing the three matches of 20mins, there was a good atmosphere and the first game between Barber and Dodd's saw a battling start from Barber but mistake ridden which saw Josh Simpson latch onto two early chances and scored from close range! The drive and skills of Anderson, Partington and Dutton lead to further chances for Simpson who scored his hatrick. The Barber boys struggled to make meaningful attacks at O'Connell's goal, but a chances for Black and Querashi were squandered and Dutton finished off another chance for Dodd's who won 4-0.

In the game on the opposite pitch Lever played host to Hodgson in a tight game in which both teams attacked well, this game was full of chances and it was a good close finish from Hodgson that got this game going. A good shot that Wise could not do much about from Evans brought the scores level, but Charters won the game for Lever in the last five minutes of the game 2-1.

In the second round of match's there was a tight game between an improving Barber and Hodgson which saw Barber score through Black with a firm strike but a brace from Spink saw Hodgson win 2-1, different from the 8-1 win from Hodgson in the house matches before Christmas. On the other pitch the two strong sides of the evening held out for a 0-0 draw, even though their were plenty of chances for both teams. But the passing movement and chances shown from both sides shown that this group of players have a lot of potential.

The final match of the evening saw Lever play an open expansive game leading to opportunities at both ends, Barber had played the best hockey of their evening with good performances on their debut from Hatter and Bowman. But Lever scored through Jadeja with five minutes to spare. That goal meant that Dodds had to win in their last game against Hodgson. But an early goal through Simpson the top goalscorer saw Dodds take the momentum and further chances fell fro both teams but it was a good finish from Spink that meant there game was a draw and that Lever won the title.

It is a testament to the players that the hockey has improved massively. I would like to congratulate the winners Lever, lead by captain Walker, Hodgson, Gray, Jadeja, Smith, Wise, Ellis and Charters. Well done to their team and to all players, umpires and Mr Thomason for helping out setting up and running the house matches.

1st XI v Bolton School

On a nice afternoon down at the Bebington Oval we were well prepared getting down to the pitch for 1.45. With an extended squad this week it meant that we could make changes and give all members of the squad a game. It can be a tricky against Bolton we started well but found a solid well organised Bolton side and we found it difficult to break them down. It took a change of formation moving Bush up as a right forward with Lyness and Evans. It was the attacking instinct of Bush and Lyness down the right and left that began to create openings. This lead to the first goal that saw Plimley pounce onto a Bush pull back, 1-0. We were playing some good stuff but we couldn't take our opportunities and chances, but short corners are an issue and decision making around the dee is poor and needs working on. Lyness doubled the lead before half time, 2-0. I then explained the new tactics on numerous occasions but it was beginning to work the only floor again in the second half was our overall fitness! A quick burst saw Lyness score his second and Evans score two close range goals. A mess of a short corner saw Bush score and then the introduction of Byrne saw him finish smartly and Lyness linked together with Evans to complete his hatrick. The Bolton side didn't give up but their players just played on the break and scored two goals past debut goalkeeper Burgess. Bush finished off proceeding in an interesting game that saw us again play some good hockey and score amazingly nine goals. The progress made by all players is very good, but some aspects of the game need developing for us to maintain the success we have had over the last few weeks.

Well done, 9-2 win!

Wirral U14's v St Anselms

On a cold Thursday night a very large squad of budding, enthusiastic players descended on the Bebington Oval. It was great to see the lads raring to go and with some players starting their first game it was going to be interesting to see how we got on. After a sleepy start we began to move the ball to each other but too often we played the ball down the middle into contact or played the ball into their hands.

As the half progressed the likes of McGilloway, Lewin and Wilkinson began to link things together. Creating opportunities and getting a couple of short corners. The first that saw Wilkinson move to the right to change his angle and shoot low and hard past the St Anselms keeper, 1-0. With changes taking place left right and centre and with debuts for Knott, Portbury and Bolderson and returns for Lawton, Clegg, Lee and Jardine. It was impressive to see us get further chances and a solid performance from Graham kept the score down at the Wirral end.

Once Crane scored from close range from a Wilkinson short corner we started to play better hockey. We were just lacking width and the use of Lamen and Edwards. As we approached half time a St Anselms shot hit Lee on the foot only for St Anselms to react quickest and score from close range, 2-1. At half time we saw another debut for Cotcher Riley in goal. He was able to keep a clean sheet as further changes saw all of the boys get a good 15/20 mins each.

I have been really impressed with the approach and attitude of the boys throughout the season both to training and to the matches. This is a team that can only improve and with weekly sessions I am sure that this tea with have future success.

I feel that if more of the boys can begin to play club hockey the better the squad and team can become. It has been good working with you guys this season. Well done

Wirral 1st / 2nd's v St Anselms (Oval)

In our final duel of the season against our local rivals, both teams were down at the Oval ready to go, warming up well and up for the game!! Following on from the last two weeks performances the key thing against St Anselms is competing and taking our chances.

We started brightly and both teams looked to play hockey. The first chance fell to Wirral who saw Evans in the dee, with a little composure he could have finished from five yards out. But his touch deserted him. This seemed to be the case, but we kept plugging away. There were solid excellent performances from Taylor who looked to build and dominate midfield, the ever improving Lyness and Rid in midfield were looking to create further opportunities for the pacey Wright and poacher Evans. The opportunities were just squandered and I felt we would end up paying for our mistakes!!

As the half developed Saints created a couple of opportunities and scored two goals in quick succession! How I don't know because on the balance of play and short corners we should have at least scored! It maybe was going to be one of those days. 2-0 at half time was harsh, but we needed to alter things having a go at half court that worked and put St Anselms under pressure. We pulled a goal back through Evans but further missed opportunities and corners from Bush came to nothing and St Anselms scored a third again against the run of play! 3-1. Unreal but thats how it works when you don't take your chances.

In the 2nd game we started well and with a new side and re-apperances from Crosby and Shum we had a good shape. A disallowed goal from Evans seemed harsh from a corner but a couple of poor goals conceded in the second half was our downfall, but as the first team game we missed plenty of chances and this again against a side that is not any better than us was the reason for the defeat!

The School Year 9 Hockey house matches were played again down at the Bebington Oval on Thursday 26th February. This was a chance for all of the boys to represent their house and show the progress that these boys have made this year. It again took a little while to set up the pitches, moving the goals, get the goalkeepers ready and all players down at the Oval after Rugby 7's practices but we started on time so we could get the three matches in.

Once ready the three umpires (Bush, Walker & Elias) and myself were able to start proceedings. There was some excellent hockey played with strong performances in the first game from Dodds who ran out winners 3-1 against Barber, Edwards scoring two good goals and McGilloway finishing fortunately from close range after Morris had scored. A late surge from Barber saw Greenall put away his chance into the roof of the net 3-2.

In the game on the other pitch the skills of Wilkinson were back as he scored a hatrick against Lever. But some good defending and good goalkeeping from all four keepers, Graham, Cartwright, Weston then Davidson and Berry!!

In the second round of games there was good chances missed in the Lever and Barber game but Lever came out 3-0 winners with goals from Gouldson and Lamen (2). In the game on the other pitch a close fought 0-0 draw was played out between Hodgson and the ever improving Dodds!

As we went into the final set of matches it was between Dodds and Hodgson for the title, but after a good start from Barber taking the lead through Parsons against Hodgson they were to come back and take the title with goals from Burchill and Wilkinson, 2-1. In a fiercely competitive game between Dodds and Lever it was again a 0-0 draw that was the result, good defending, but at times poor finishing was both teams downfall.

Wirral v Merchant Taylors (2nd's / U16's)

In the second game of the day, the players of the future and many of our Year 11 side played against a side who had earlier in the season beaten them 12-0. We started the brighter and from the first corner had a couple of shots and then the final rebound fell to Wright, who on debut scored from close range, 1-0. We had further chances falling to Spink and Evans who could not finish. This lead as the half progressed a major mix up between Elias, Crawford and Byrne that left the Merchant's centre forward to finish smartly past a helpless Burgess, 1-1. This remained the score till half time with good performances from Plimley, Oldham and at times when not hacking Elias and Dennis.

The key to this side is confidence, shape and just playing hockey together, we went behind a the start of the second half following a basic mistake made in the dee, 2-1. And as tiredness crept into our game mistakes happened especially around our dee, teo became three, until the excellent Wright attacked down the right skipping past three players before the ball was crossed towards Denis who took his time and finished in the bottom left corner.

The last 7 seven minutes saw us make silly errors around our circle and leave poor Burgess exposed to close range shots. The score flattered Merchants, but left our boys knowing that a good shape and structure followed up with confidence and real determination is all this team needs!! The final score as 6-2, but a man of the match debut from Wright showed me this side have some real promise!

On a very sandy pitch as you can see by the picture we set up at home for two fixtures against Merchant Taylor's School from Crosby. On the back of a very good solid performance away at Kings Chester we all arrived at the Oval before two prepared for the game. With the 1st team staying the same after the committed Harvey returning from Leeds to captain the side we started well. We kept a good shape and started moving the ball well on the beach like facilities. This lead to us carving out chances in the first five minutes. That fell to Hankie and the less said the better. But it was encouraging and as the half developed we had some good solid work from Gawith, Bush and an excellent link up between Evans and Frank lead to a smart turn and close finish by Lyness. Once in front we have been susceptible to conceding, but the sturdy back four of Walker, Eastwood, Harvey and Gawith and Frank held firm, often covering for each other making Smithy's life a lot easier.

Some very good interplay saw Lyness double the lead in a very similar position down the left after good work from the improving Rid!! We have just now started to see what confidence, control and simple hockey can do. We continued to defend well getting in front of men and the best move of the game saw Steadman set a very quick Lyness away down the right who crossed accuratly for Evans to finish smartly, 3-0. Merchants still looked to impose thmselves, but the hustle and bustle of Taylor and the good work by Bush and Lyness was causing havoc on the break.

As we started the second half the confident Rid cut inside and V dragged out beating his man twice and playing some neat hockey with Bush. This lead to our forth from a corner that broke down but Bush was quickest to react and score from an acute angle on the left, 4-0. The fifth came to the excellent Harvey who had advanced forward and finished from close range to add to his tally for the season. But to rub salt into the wounds against a Merchants side that beat us earlier in the season, Bush scored a sixth beating the keeper at the near post. In truth we could have scored more had it not been for Davies lifting his stick and Rid using his back stick among other chances.

An excellent performance from players who have worked very hard this season, and now have learnt how to play effectively together and win!!

Wirral 1st Team v Kings Chester

In our first fixture of the year against Kings Chester, who are the North West regional winners, we started very well after a good warm up. On a wet day it made a very good looking pitch play well. The first five minutes saw a great chance fall at the feet of Davies who didn't connect well enough and his shot was saved. His replacement after 8 minutes was Lyness who linked up superbly with Evans to play a great one two together around the Kings defence and score one of my contenders for team goal of the season in which Evans slotted his shot into the right corner,

1-0.

As the half went on the Kings side came into the game, but with excellent organisation from Harvey and Frank the Wirral team defended well getting in front of their men and in possession of the ball making good passes. Excellent battling games from Eastwood and Taylor enabled us to create chances through the skills of Bush and Riddiough predominantly down the right. As changes were made throughout the game the quality of hockey was maintained and Crawford who replaced Walker stopped on the line from the Kings short corner! Only to put the ball back into the mixer for the Kings player to fire a powerful reverse stick shot above Smith and into the roof!

As the second half progressed we kept breaking forward and with some neat hockey down the left between the ever improving Gawith, who linked well with Bush the ball made its way across the dee off the keeper and to Riddiough who scored with an excellent reverse stick shot into the net! 'Happy days' There were many very good performances from this great team. The main thing that impressed me was the fact that we played some excellent hockey that was superbly organised on the pitch by the engines of the team Harvey, Frank and Taylor!

Well done guys, beating a Kings Chester side who are through to a North West final is an brilliant achievement and shows what progress and potential this side has when you put it all together!!

Wirral U14 v Neston HS - League

In a tightly fought game at the Neston Rec a slightly altered team started well against Neston. With good driving runs from Wilkinson, Lewin Lamen and Roberts chances fell to Gouldson, but to no avail. As the half progressed we had further chances that fell to Roberts and Lamen. Our key strength was the ability to get low and defending well from the back. The outstanding Corcoran and McGilloway were complemented in defence by the ever improving Deakin and Clegg, on full debut at left back. I was please with the first half performance but we just had to press home our possession and take our chances,

It took until the last couple of minutes for Wilkinson to drive inside and strike a reverse stick shot powerfully for Roberts to deflect well into the corner of the goal, 1-0. Brilliant again fellas, well done. This was another example of positive hockey, good effort and work rate from the whole squad!

U16's v St Anselms

In a highly competitive game down at the Oval the U16 team set out to gain revenge against St Anselms. These matches are usually close and with a slightly disrupted side we saw Tom Smith make his school team debut in goal. In a tight first half St Anselms took the lead but the hardest part of the first half saw Clegg caught in a challenge by a Saints shoulder following a Dennis foul. This ended Cleggs game and a trip to hospital resulting in a broken nose in four places!! As the second half started Saints doubled their lead but some good attacking hockey saw Wirral get back into the game through a well struck Dutton corner, 2-1.

But St Anselms again scored and took a two goal lead only to see Farrington score a definite goal of the season contender, with a great lob to bring the score back to 3-2. But we could not seem to take our chances and the St Anselms team further added to their lead to 4-2 until Dennis smashed in from the edge of the circle, but as Mr Thomason said, man of the match must go to Tom Smith on debut who played in goal with two left handed gloves and without a good quality chest pad.

The 4-3 result with a slightly altered side and full debuts for Shenck and Smith and recalls for Turner was a real positive and considering that we struggled in our last fixture against Saints we have progressed well this year. Well done guys. Have a good half term break and you guys have a game at home on the first Wed back against Merchant Taylors.

On Wed 4th Feb our annual fixtures against Denstone College come around and our trip down to Denstone this year only just happened. It was not due to anything human we could really have done just the freak weather that sweeped the UK, bringing SNOW!!

On speaking to Rod at Denstone on the morning of the game he said they were doing there damnedest to get the games on and so we ventured down towards Stoke with the U15 and U14 teams. On arrival I thought we had no chance as there was snow everywhere. But to my amazement the old pitch had been totally cleared!! Game on!

The U14 's were on first and we started well moving the ball around well against a large and physical side. Whatever they feed their boys they have their affect. They put themselves about. But our skills and strength on the ball and simple hockey helped us to carve opening and we took and early lead through Roberts who stabbed home a goal from close range. Once ahead we struggled to front mark and often left their centre forward unmarked leading to chances for Denstone. It meant that Graham was the busier of the two keepers, but doing a very good job.

As the second half started we started to make good progress down the right with Wilkinson, Lamen and Lewin creating opportunities for Gouners and Roberts but to no avail. As we looked for a second goal we gained some good corners and we doubled and then tripled our lead through two Wilkinson reverse stick shots, 3-0. The exit the of Wilkinson saw Denstone score a consolation from a short corner to leave us with a good 3-1 victory. Well done boys!!

The U15 team started solidly and looked confident moving the ball around, this team has made a lot of progress over the last 3 months and some players are making their mark. The illustrious Dutton lead the way with 2 stunning solo goals and with Hodgson adding with a close range effort after a melly in the dee we were always ahead. But as we missed further chances the strong and competitive Denstone team kept pegging us back. Overall I think we deserved our 3-2 win. Well done fellas, special mention should also go to the ever improving Broom and Cheung as well as Dutton's two excellent goals!

In a good very competitive game the mixed under U15 with some U16 player played down at the Oval. With a debut for Wirral GS of Wright, we started well with good passing a solid performances from Evans, Broom and Hayat, with the effervescent Dutton looking to link the play with the attackers we looked strong. But it was as the first half went on that we were unable to convert good chances and short corners (6) to any effect!! Something to work on!!

An error by Evans lifting a ball saw the St Anselm's have a quickly taken free hit that was struck home from close range. As the game progressed St Anselm's enhanced their lead only for Wirral to fight back with a good neat finish from McCann and from a good well worked corner in the second half Clegg finished with aplomb from 5 yards. This brought the scores back to 2-2 a good performance and a commendable performance that saw Wright make his debut and 17 players play on Thurs evening.

This group of players certainly have a lot of potential and the more games they play the better they will become! Well done again lads.

Wed v St Anselms (1st & 2nd team)

On a cool day down at the Oval the 1st team were playing first against as always a highly competitive game. The first ten minutes saw the Wirral back four moving the ball around the back well but as the ball went back into midfield we struggled to keep possession this meant that the St Anselms team were able to press. In the usual end to end games we have against Saints, we had chances for Evans and Plimley. The team went behind to again another poor goal due to silly errors. The St Anselms lead was doubled in the second half as we looked to get back into the game.

The major loss in the second half was that of Harvey who twisted his knee as he was caught on the knee by the ball. This was a big loss and we struggled to take the chances that were created in the second half, 2-0 loss!!

The second team played a good solid game creating opportunities but as chances went begging the St Anselms team scored on the break. This was a shame as Burgess had made some good saves and the game had been quite even. There is definate progress being made and good performances from Byrne, Spink, Shum and Eastwood. Well Done guys

Wirral U15's v U16's

In the match of the teams of the future an Thurs evening at the Oval the two teams were well represented and set up. Both teams played a positive attacking style of hockey, moving the ball on quickly, defending well and created opportunities for their respective forwards. If felt that both Evans and Broom for the Year 10s had great games getting the ball and distributing it and that with the power and tenacity of Dutton, Cheung, Partington and Hayat looking to feel the likes of Spink and Quareshi. We had a game on our hands the combined skills of Oldham, Eastwood, Dennis, Ollerhead and the link play between Edge and Farrington meant chances and opportunities would always come about!!

The good hockey played saw a dubious corner given to the Year 11's toward the end of the first half that was duly dispatched by the clinical McCann! And at half time there were little things to work on. The 10's started well and equaliser through the forward thinking and close finish by Cheung, 1-1. As the half progressed both sides could have scored, but with four minutes to go Eastwood dispatched a corner past O'Connell, 2-1. Despite other opportunities for both sides, especially Edge the scores remained the same!!

Well done guys, some excellent stuff!!

Wirral XI v Reaseheath College

On a bitterly cold afternoon down at the Oval, the first team squad all got back into action following the Xmas brea, exams, interviews, injuries and illness. It was the first time for about 6 weeks they had played together. Reaseheath arrived ready to play with ten players and with their new addition Jay Elias and Phil Taylor in the second half we had a good game. The Reaseheath side possessed considerable pace and skill at times.

It was good to see though that a patient build up and good passing opened up their defense for Lyness to score the opening goal past a hapless goalkeeper. That lead was doubled just before half time. It was not until their start player who roamed from centre back with pace out shone past our defense and slotted past Smith, 2-1 at half time.

As we started the second half chance after chance fell to the forwards especially Spink, Evans and Plimley all missing from close range. It was down to Davies who scored two and another from Spink to complete the victory of 5-2. Although I am sure Mr Shum will be wearing shin pads after the shot that hit the post from the short corner in the second half!!

Well done fellas, St Anselms at home next week for the 1st and 2nd teams. 2.00 and 3.15 starts.

Tues 20th Training

On Tues we saw both the First team and the U14 teams down training. They worked on different forms of passing and then application to a shooting drill. This was then developed into forms of posting up and developed for the first team into support play from the right and left. The players worked hard and finished on both halves of the pitch with small sided games.

U14 North West Semi Final v Lakes School

On Monday 19th Jan the Year 9 team set out on there long journey up to Cumbria. The 2 hour journey was the first milestone to get over. The boys were all looking forward to the game against the Cumbrian champions and the away trip. On arrival we saw their good looking pitch which would be great to have ourselves and warmed up and prepared for the game.

As the game started it was clear that the Lakes School had some strong, quick players who had played plenty of hockey. They took an early lead and in the first 15 minutes dominated the play as we struggled to make simple passes. We were 3-0 down as half time came around and with only one chance for Robert's to score from. A real eye opener!!

But determination was the key and the work ethic that has got us so far appeared in the second half and with that plenty of chances. What if's as Sutton, Gouldson, Wilkinson, Lewin and Robert's all had great chances to get us back in the game. With us on the offensive it left this strong Lakes School side with opportunities at the other end and they took two further chances in the second half to take the score to 5-0.

A real shame overall, but a great experience and achievement from the lads!!

Wednesday v Kings Macc

A very inexperienced side headed to Kings Macc due to the number of lads having exams, illness or injury. This lead us to only having 4 sixth formers!! This was always going to be difficult against a strong Kings side. In the main the team competed well and played some tidy hockey but it was in both final thirds that we struggled. There were first team debuts for Farrington, Edge, Dutton and Wilkinson. They did themselves proud with Dutton probably man of the match. The 7-0 score line was not all negative. This team is the future and that future looks positive.

After a staff training session on Tuesday we had a coached game between two closely matched teams the Year 9 and 10 teams. The game was played at a good pace with the Year 10 team passing the ball around effectively thus leading to scoring opportunities. They opened the scoring through Qureshi from close range following some ping pong with Cartwright. In reply the Year 9 team attacked on the break with purpose and created their own opportunities only to be thwarted by O'Connell. As the game drew to a close the Year 9 team won a corner which Wilkinson dispatched to leave the score at 1-1.

A good game and one that saw some new faces playing the game.

Well Done and congratulations to the Wirral Year 9 team in their final played at Calday Grange. On a windy cold morning at Calday, the Wirral boys turned up in changing room 4 in anticipation of the game ahead, except Parso. But the vice captain arrived well in time for the warm up! We had a good warm up with everyone prepared for the big occasion. A good crowd had come to support the boys and were vocal from the side hoping we could do this business.

We started superbly and within this first two minutes we were passing the ball to each other and attacking the Calday Dee. As we progressed down the right with Crane and Lamen the ball was played across the Dee for Roberts to finish smartly from about 6 yards out. The perfect start!! We continued to press and we were beginning to dominate the first half, some solid work from McGilloway saw us continue to attack the circle. We won a couple of corners that really just needed touches from close range. But another short corner came about and Wilkinson shot on his reverse stick and the ball made it's way into the far corner, amazingly 2-0. This was definitely going to be our day as Calday had a break away chance which saw them have a reverse stick shot that came off the underside of the bar, with Parsons clearing with Dobson to the side of the pitch. The next attack saw the ball played from Wilkinson up to a battling Gouldson who turned and fed Roberts, who then had a Thierry Henry like chance and finished the one on one with the goalkeeper with aplomb! We were in dream land but as the half progressed we just kept going at the Calday team and further chances, especially for Lewin and opportunities from corners for Wilkinson and Crane. It was quite possibly the best half of hockey I have ever seen at Wirral Grammar School.

What to say at half time was the question, but more of the same was in order. Cartwright made way for Graham after not having much to do, but Graham didn't touch the ball in the second half as we worked hard in defence. There were other opportunities for Gouldson as we maintained our dominance of the game. The effort levels were fantastic and with every player playing their part it showed what hard work over the last four weeks can do! We were deserved of our 3-0 win and we will now have the semi final of the north west region against a Cumbrian school for a place in the final against the Lancashire or Cheshire winners.

There is plenty more to come from these fellas, well done to everyone involved, Mr Cooper, Mr Thomason and all of the parents and supporters. I will keep you informed of the next game and of our progress.

The School Year 9 House Matches were played on Thurs 11th Dec down at the Bebington Oval. With it being the first time of playing for a lot of the boys, it took a little while to organise and to get up the goals, pitch and mainly goalkeepers. Once ready and with the two umpires in place Walker and Bush (thank you fellas) we started. There was some excellent Hockey played with the man to watch Wilkinson. There were some excellent performances from the goalkeepers who in most cases had put on the kit for the first time!!

The results overall saw Hodgson crowned the winners by winning two games and drawing against Hodgaon. The leading goalscorers of the tournament were Wilkinson (6), Morris (3) and also Lamen (2) and Griffiths Alex (2).

Hockey this week – 8th Dec

This week there should be an U16 game on Tuesday evening; this is dependent upon a staff meeting. The game is a League game and the team will go up on Monday. There is therefore no training on Tues night at the Oval.
On Wednesday there is the usual 1^st and 2^nd team fixture against Birkenhead School at Oxton HC. The reports for this game will be up later in the week.
On Thursday we will be having the Year 9 Hockey House matches down at the Oval starting at 4.15pm.

Wirral U14's v St Anselms

In a tense tight affair on a cold wet night down at the Oval. The Year 9 team just needed to get a result. With resolute defending by the again outstanding back four of Parsons, Deakin, Dobson and Crane we held strong and a couple of saves by Cartwright were required. We started well against a dogged St Anselms side who fight like us for everything! But as the half developed the class of our midfield showed with again workman like performances from Edwards and McGillaway. The finesse of Wilkinson and at times tonight Roberts created opportunities for us to score. The attacking play and movement from all of the forwards, Gouldson, Lamen (who had chances), Lewin, Burchill, Sutton and Lee helped all night with chances in the second half for Lewin and Corcoran. But the winning goal came from Wilkinson's excellent shot at the end of the first half from a short corner!

This tense atmosphere of the game for me, was not being shown by the lads and their effort levels and willingness to learn and improve is excellent. The 1-0 win ensured that we qualified for the Wirral County Finals on the 11th Jan at Calday Grange . This is one of the proudest moments of my teaching career, you fellas deserve this guys. We will have to work hard now so that we get the best out of ourselves and win the final against Calday. We will have to do some team training over the next few weeks to be in the best shape possible.

Wed v St Anselms

Due to the weather at Kings Chester, we had our day rearranged with the 1st and 2nd teams playing at home against St Anselms. The bottom line in both games was that we were better in both second halves. We lost 2-1 in the 2nd team game with Phil Burgess making his 2nd team debut in goal and Alex Smith playing outfield, Crosby also made a welcome return and Shum showing promise in his first game. In the first team game the missed chances in the second half saw us go down again 2-1. Annoying and frustrating as we could do so much better. We live to fight another day.

Next week tough games against Birkenhead, away at Oxton HC.

Wirral U14's v Neston

On a bitterly cold Tuesday night the Year 9 team played away a Neston. It was one of those nights when the win was so important and our performance mattered!! We started well with the impressive Wilkinson dictating the play. We played compact and defended stoutly with Deakin and Dobson ensuring their forwards were tightly marked and then Parso and Crane offered us width from full back.

The energy tenacity and guile of the midfielders McGillaway, Edwards, Roberts and at times Lamen supported the forwards of Gouldson, Camp, Sutton. I was Wilkinson who grabbed the first opportunity with an excellent reverse stick shot that went into the bottom corner. Further pressure was put on the Neston goal and with chances down the right falling to Roberts and opportunities falling to Gouldson to add to our lead. It was not until the second half that we scored a second, another reverse stick shot from Wilkinson was saved by the goalkeeper only for McGillaway to steal in and score for 3yards taking a whack from the goalkeeper in the process, 2-0. Happy Days!!

Year 10 Inter House Hockey Matches - Oval

The Year 10 house matches were well attended on a cold evening down at the Oval. The four houses were well represented with a 7 a-side tournament raring to go. The four goalkeepers got kitted up to represent their house, Teanby (Barber) O'Connell (Dodd's) Wise (Lever) and Miller (Hodgson). We were all set ready to go with Bush and Walker umpiring and the goals set up were able to start on time playing the three matches of 20mins.

There was a good atmosphere and the first game between Barber and Dodd's saw a cagey start, but as the game progressed you could see little phases of play develop through the passing of Anderson, Dutton and McGee. This lead to the opening goal by Dutton. The Barber boys struggled to make meaningful attacks at O'Connell's goal often running into contact. Dodd's doubled their lead through Dutton and just before the end Anderson finished well! 3-0.

In the game on the opposite pitch Lever played host to Hodgson in a tight game in which both teams attacked well, but with solid defences of Smith and Walker for Lever and Evans and Hayat for Hodgson prevented goals being scored. As the half went on chances came but saves from both Wise and Miller kept the scores even. It was not until Hodgson broke free that Spink found himself in space and slotted home. In reply it was late on that Walker took advantage of some sloppy defending to equalise with only a couple of minutes left. A good game that finished 1-1.

In the second round of match's there was a very one sided game between Barber and Hodgson an which Hodgson ran riot winning 8-1. Goals from Evans (3), Spink (4), Muise and in reply for Barber, Byrne. Even though there was a goal fest on one pitch, the best game of the evening was between Dodd's and Lever in which the only goal of the game from close range by Anderson after good goalkeeping from Wise. But the passing movement and chances shown from both sides shown that this group of players have a lot of potential. The Lever team had Charters impressing as he made his debut in the competition. If they had been able to put away their chances past the impressive O'Connell then the house crown could have gone their way!!

The final match of the evening saw the two teams that could win the house crown against each other, Hodgson having to beat Dodd's and and a win for Lever against Barber would mean they finished joint 2nd. With both games having a tentative start the first goal came in the Lever v Barber match. The chance came through a Lever counter attack which Walker scored with aplomb. Gray added two further goals and goals from Aaron Smith, Jadeja and a last minute goal from Charters who pleaded for a minute to be added to play but that was not required as he finished the final goal in a 6-1 victory. Byrne scored his second goal of the tournament.

In the Dodd's - Hodgson game the battle saw a close encounter saw Anderson again score the only goal, but with a injury to Hayat, disrupting Hodgson and as they had no subs they found breaking down Dodd's difficult. Dodd's came out 1-0 winners!!

The overall winners with 3 wins were Dodd's lead by captain Dutton, McGee, Anderson, O'Connell, Harrison, Wahlers and Partington. Well done to their team and to all players, umpires and Mr Thomason for helping out setting up and running the house matches.

IPT U15 Hockey Report v St Anselms

The date was Thursday 20th Nov, the opposition St Anselms u15, the conditions.... bitterly cold! As Mr 'Raffa' Thomason and Sam O'Connell entered the Oval car park, a click and the 8 massive halogen lights whirred into action... tonight was game night.

Mr Metcalf (director of hockey) selected the squad of 15 players for the evening's match; could the lads apply the finishing touches to months of hard work? The Wirral team arrived early and were well into their warm up before the St Anselms squad arrived. St Anselms brought their full strength team, a manager and a coach to stamp their authority over WGS.

St Anselms won the toss and opted for push back, Wirral chose ends, meaning they were attacking the home end in the second half. The Wirral plan was simple; keep the ball, make simple passes and support each other. Despite the initial focus it was St Anselms who started the stronger. They kept possession well and harried the Wirral team; forcing mistakes from the back four. Wirral couldn't make headway, the midfield was being overrun and despite good movement from Hodgson and Quereshi up top the St Anselms defence was rarely troubled. Captain Max Dutton was finding it difficult to settle in midfield, Usman Hayat was ineffective on the right side of midfield as most of the play was on Nathan Walkers reverse stick. Tom Cheung was doing his best to win the ball back from his defensive midfield role but pressure was mounting on us. A switch in midfield saw a quicker and stronger Max go to the right side and a more nimble Usman into the centre. Suddenly Wirral found more time and space, spreading the play out wide and utalising the right hand side - we were now on the offensive. More activity in their final third prompted 'Raffa' Thomason in replacing Saad's tired legs with the fresh ones of Jordan Gray. The super sub didn't disappoint, literally seconds after entering the fray Gray found the ball on the end of his stick in the dee - smash - bottom corner - 1-0 - get in my son. Minutes later the whistle blew for half time.

We gathered in the top goal, the team talk made easier because of Jordan's fluent strike. Our focus for the second half was defend tight through the middle and then play wide expansive hockey when attacking. Wirral dominated the start of the second half with Hayat, Broom and Cheung distributing the ball with confidence to Walker and Dutton. Partington and Evans looked to get forward in support of the midfield from full back. All was going to plan until we lost the ball and Anselm's scored a dubious goal against the run of play, shuffling the ball in the goal from 2 yards out. However, the fighting Wirral spirit shone through and we continued to press looking to regain the lead. The match became more open as both teams went in search of the all important third goal. Sam O'Connell was called into action making a stunning save low to his left. As the game wore on we looked the fitter and sharper side, but more importantly, we had the hunger. Good work down the right hand side from Chris Partington and Captain Max teed up Jordan Gray for a half chance, he converted with ease - great technique! And parity was restored 2-1 to Wirral. 15 minutes to go with Anselm's tiring, the Wirral squad flexed its muscle throwing on Andy Ellis, Saad Qureshi, Mike Spink and debutant Tom Wise. They say you can tell how good a side is by the strength of it's bench - need I say more. The team took on a new lease of life, fresh legs continued to press home the Wirral advantage and we were now playing our entire hockey in the final third. Anselm's were a beaten team and Wirral never looked like relinquishing the lead - despite having to play extra minutes due to some dubious time keeping from the Anselm's coach. At the final whistle it was 'Raffa' Thomason who was congratulating his team on the winning performance. It was difficult to pick a man of the match with Sam's superb saves, James Broom's resilience at the back, Nathan Walker's consistency in midfield and Jordan Gray's finesse in the final third, but I am giving the award to Usman Hayat for his domination in the centre of midfield. Well done boys, a thoroughly deserved win.

On a very pleasant day down at the Oval we set our stall out with a good warm up, applying ourselves well to the practices in the hope that they would be used in the game. Our first five minutes made me feel that was the case. We moved the ball well around the back and played nice passes into midfield and looked threatening. The tackle by Frank, dribble and pass into Evans showed our intent. We were definitely the brighter side creating the first chance that saw the ball fired to the right post for Plimly to deflect into the goal, 1-0.

What came from then on in was a lack luster half that saw us still create good opportunities but again we were not working back and often leaving big gaps. This left us exposed and open to giving away corners, which we duly obliged. Kings scored two well worked corners back to the injector, which Crawford knowing now, what to do will be able to deal with next time, but we were 2-1 down!! We were still playing ok, in parts but lacked dynamism and a cutting edge, too many time running into contact or giving away loose ball.

A good run from Plimly saw his through on goal with two supporting he went to goal where the keeper made a good save. With players out of position though Kings broke again quickly and scored at our end. How quickly this game can change, 3-1 down at half time.

As always the basics and willingness to win was emphasised and taking a leaf out of the older heads in the team was required!! The second half saw better performances and a more open game, good interchanging passes from Harvey, Bush and Steadman saw chances created for Evans, Bush and Gawith. But as the half progressed we started to attack down the right with Walker who played the ball into Gawith, who laid off short but for Taylor to mop up the pieces. He then played a good ball into Harvey who squared the ball for Gawith to miss but Riddiough to finish from 2yds. 3-2.

The score remain the same despite good possession from Wirral and further chances, an excellent save from Smith ensured the Cheshire side did not further their lead, but again man of the match performances from Frank, Taylor, returning Lui and Bush in the second half. There are lots of positives it is just a steep learning curve for some players and against good hockey playing schools we must realise that we have to step up to the plate to win these matches.

Tuesday's training

The session at the Oval was well attended by all age ranges, run by AJM and CCC. After the warm up we focused upon attacking in the final 1/3 of the field, looking at creating width and then supporting the play on both the right and left hand sides. We worked hard on that with AJM mucking in as well trying to show the way!

Well done to all players for attending and for Coopers team that won 3-2 in the game at the end.

The Year 10 team were to be lead by Mr Thomason on Thursday evening down at the Oval. We were to come out on top with a 2-1 victory against St Anselms. The man of the evening was Jordan Gray with two goals. But solid performances from O'Connell, Hayat and Broom according to Mr Thomason. He will be adding his own match report this week fellas.

Wirral U14's v Calday

On a cold Thursday evening the Year 9 team ventured down to Calday to play them for the 2nd time this season. This was the fellas first game for about a month and considering that they are not all playing hockey each week as they have done a rotation to football they played very well.

We started tactically very well with Wilkinson holding the middle of the pitch with McGillaway and Parsons either side ensuring that the Calday team could not attack down the middle. We started the better with good passing and control with Corcoran making his debut at right back and Jardine at left back we started to look solid! We battled hard and were able to create a few chances through the inventiveness of Roberts, Edwards and Gouldson linking well up front. This lead to our first short corner hat was rifled home by Wilkinson and we were ahead. We were able to withstand lots of Calday pressure with good defensive play from Deakin and diving stops from Dobson. We were to lead 1-0 at half time, signal the pictures.

The second half saw us perform well again but tiredness and little mistakes caused us to give away short corners. This lead to Calday scoring 2 close range goals and lead 2-1. This was not over as we pushed forward often on the break, but to no avail. I was very pleased with the application of the players, the attitude and approach showed.

We are defiantly heading in the right direction, well done boys!

Wirral v Calday 1st XI

In a game where we had some key layers missing and some changes in position to be made we played a very spirited game and positive game. The quality over 70 minutes told and chances were few and far between. There were tough some excellent performances from Alex Smith in goal who has been a solid performer week on week without getting much of a mention!! In addition it was good to see Dennis, Oldham and Ollerhead make there debuts. I felt that the best performances of the day came from the ever committed Frank, equally committed and sometimes unorthodox Byrne and the dependable duo of Harvey and Taylor.

We must step up to the plate and deliver on a regular basis to get results against this Calday team. We defiantly are getting there but a 4-0 result flattered them and I feel I got more from the game. I would like to that all of the players especially those who played a large part in both 1st and 2nd team matches. Well Done!!

Wirral v Calday 2nd XI

The Calday week usually shows us where we are up to with our progress and shows how well we are doing. When it came to Wed this seemed fairly difficult due in the most part to illness and injury, this sidelined 6 players from the squad that made things difficult but not impossible. We went to Calday with the 2nd team out for revenge and a better performance than our last showing, the 12-0 defeat!

We started well with good passing and confidence going forward and look the lead through a well worked goal, TD slotting it away. This gave us a bit of confidence that this team and especially some of the individual players need. They will need to step up and play 1st team next year and the character shown by Dennis, Evans, Davies and a more encouraging performances from Spink, Plimley and Byrne were apparent!!

We were even at half time 1-1, but a lack of finishing and costly errors within our own Dee gave corners away and the Calday side put away their chances to win 3-1. This was definite progress from the same set of players who were playing a Calday team that featured 5 players who play regularly in the 1st team. Mimmmmm!!

Wirral U16's v Calday

On Tuesday evening we heading down to Calday to play on their newly floodlight pitch. It looks great but we were here to cause a stir!! After some encouraging performances and with some boys playing at a higher level I felt that we would give Calday a good game. The score in the end does not suggest it but I felt we did. It is the work rate that impresses me. It is a tough game and at time you just have to do the simple things well, pass, control and move the ball at pace giving the ball to our players.

In the first half we did that but silly mistakes cost us and we were two down!! Conceding corners was our downfall and we were punished with Sam O'Connell deputising in goal we made it hard for him and their accurate shooting and close finishing saw them increase their lead to four. At times we had good patches of play and for 20 mins in the second half had the lions share of the ball but to no avail, until we broke quickly through the middle through Dennis tenacity and playing the ball through to Edge whose deft touch played it in the path of Farrington who finished strongly. We had a sniff but further opportunities that fell the way of man of the match Dennis didn't materialise.

We were unfortunate in my eyes to lose 6-1, but mistakes count for a lot! But again encouraging displays from Oldham, Eastwood, Ollerhead, Farrington, Edge and the U15 boys whom played their part. We are definitely going in the right direction and with performances like Dennis's we can only get better.

Thurs - U16 School House Matches

On what looked like a wet cool evening developed into a pleasant evening down at the Oval. With all four houses teams being fairly organised we got down promptly to the Oval sorting out the goals, pitches, goalkeepers, teams and umpires - Bush, Walker, Plimley and Elias.

With the stage set we started with the opening matches both close affairs with Barber beating Dodds 1-0, Eastwood the scorer and then in the second game Lever scraped home 2-1 against Hodgson with Morris having a promising game in goal. Goals in that game for Lever by Ollerhead and Kayley but in reply Parsons got one back.

In the second round of matches there were plenty of goals with Barber beating Hodgson 2-0 with goals from Eastwood and Gill. In the other game between Lever and Dodds there were 8 goals and the goal of the night a lob from Farrington over the oncoming Groome. The final score was 5-3 to Lever. Goals from Ollerhead (2), Dennis (2) and Hill rounded things off!

This brought the deciding games between Barber and Lever and Dodds and Hodgson. Both games brought drama but the great performances from Dennis and Ollerhead enabled Lever to come out on top against Barber 2-0 and take the house crown with 3 victories!! Well Done

In the second game a closely fought match Hodgson went in front after some hesitation from Hughes allowed Maclaren to finish with aplomb! But Dodds fought back and some good passing and play from Farrington and Edge saw them draw level and Edge sealed the 2-1 victory.

I would like to thank all players, goalkeepers, captains, the four umpires and to Mr Thomason for you time effort and the quality of play that brought about such a good competition. Well done to Lever who finished winners with three victories, Barber close in second followed by Dodds and Hodgson picked up the wooden spoon.

Wirral GS v Reaseheath College Wed 12th Nov

We ventured away for the second week running across country to Crewe to play Reaseheath Agricultural college. This was new territory for us playing here and I was not sure what to expect. On arriving at Crewe Vagrants ground we saw two lads drag flicking the ball into the roof of the net and also a selection of girls!! This was going to be new territory for our lads. Would our minds be focused on the game or distracted by the opposition. Well the first half seemed like we focused on the girls too much, there were plenty of errors there and where was the passion and desire to play for each other and the shirt.

With the score at half time being 1-1, the goal scored by Evans, there was a stern talking too and questioning there effort, commitment and too often their decision making! We were to see a better thought out second half with passion and thought. We kept the ball away from their better players and passed to each other creating opportunities and chances to test the goalkeeper, who had a good game.

As we gained in confidence there were goals for Evans, Davies, Riddiough, Taylor, Bush, Gawith (og) and probably others who I have missed off in the 9-1 win!! There were certainly pluses to be taken from the second half. There was impressive debuts for Hayat and Dennis and good performances from Taylor in particular. I think Frank let his mind wander at times, probably down to who he was marking. But the stud of the day started as Evans but the man of the match nominated by the girls was Plimley.

Tuesday training Nov 11th

Tuesday's session saw a decent turn out with boys committed to improve things after last week against Sandbach. After a warm up and a doggie we did some shooting and then focused on 5v5 looking and distributing the ball around the back and retaining possession. There was some good progress made and the introduction of Dennis and Hayat looked promising. We will see, Reaseheath College away tomorrow!

Wirral U15's v St Anselms - Oval

On a nice Thursday evening down the Oval the Year 10 side assembled ready for action! With new team shirts (which we will have to get some pictures of) we started well with debut performances from Muise and Quaeshi. We had some players starting and finishing the game in different positions. Partington started at right back, Lea had a storming game and played the majority of the second half at left back. Sterling performances from Broom and Evans at centre back showed promise all night. Wirral went ahead through the industrious Quaeshi who slotted home from close range!

But once that goal had gone in the game was all about mistakes. Always trying to pass the ball through the middle not keeping possession and trying to do too much It lead to a St Anselms corner that i think we tried to clear 5 times even with O'Connell back heeling the ball could we get it clear! 1-1. A stern talking too at half time brought out with new ideas and we had a good go throughout the half employing them. As the half progressed we saw good opportunities created by Dutton, Gray, Hodgson, Ellis and Hayat as we pressed for a second goal.

It was a much better performance and this team has plenty of promise it must realise it potential and work hard together to achieve it!!

Sandbach 6-1

Now where do I start with the shambles that was Sandbach on Wednesday!! We started poorly with Lyness not showing up on time, and with the rest of the team saying he had gone to the shop and it being 12.50 we had to make tracks. The hour journey seemed to have everyone is decent spirits and prepared for the game. With the team sorted we put in a good warm up and were ready to go.

I guess the crazy thing was we started very well, passing the ball around well, keeping possession, creating opportunities, whilst keeping it quiet at our own end. Even moving the ball around the back confidently was taking place!!

A few good runs by Bush, Walker and Riddiough brought the first goal, Walker applying the cross for Evan's to apply the fancy deft touch. We were ahead and playing some good stuff, the problem was we began to over commit, therefore leaving gaps for a quick Sandbach side.

Sandbach equalised through mistake one there would be further errors that lead to us being 4-1 down at half time! Unbelievable considering for 20 minutes we had been by far the better team. To make matters worse we started superbly creating chance after chance, falling to Harvey, Evans, Riddiough, Spink, Bush and Plimley nothing going in. I said to Cubey its going to be one of those days. How they scored six goals only the lads know, but we must play more as a team and work harder together. Mistakes are costly but it made look like we had been battered which was not the case, but we have to play for 35 mins each half!!

Nevertheless again there were good performances overall from Frank, Eastwood, Taylor and relentless work from Harvey, Bush and Evans but lessons must be learnt for next week!!

Lads unfortunately due to an enquiry into Craig playing in the cup, it is down as an England hockey regulation that he must be on the school roll to play in the cup competition. Therefore we are not going to be playing in the final. I'm gutted and apologise to every player involved for the fact that we have all done so well in all of the matches so far this season!!

So that you all know for Wednesday 5th Nov we are playing Sandbach away 1st and 2nd team leaving at 12.45.

Wirral 1st XI v Neston

Everyone knew their jobs and the importance of the game and raised their game to the level needed. A good start was needed and composure was the key. We started tentatively with strong passing and good movement of the ball. The attitude seemed their and the opening goal game from a well worked corner. Chances in the first half then came and went with Harvey and Walker just not having their sticks close to the ground for tip ins!

We kept battling away looking for the second goal, but with it not coming, a misplaced pass by Walker started a Neston break away down the left, only for Bush to softly lean on their left forward and for the umpire to give a harsh stroke. It was put away well and 1-1 was the score. This was the score at half time.

With ever dependable performances from Taylor and Frank at the back and constant efforts from Gawith, Lyness and Steadman we still needed two goals. Half time was about working together and tackling with two hands. This improved our second half. We went two one ahead through Bush with a straight strike, but again Neston struck back! I was not sure we could do it with many a chance going begging.

But with the Ginger Warrior returning to the fray with ten minutes left it fell to Gawith to finish with aplomb in the bottom left corner, 3-2. With no more than 3 minutes to go Harvey picked off a Neston clearance and attacked down the right putting a ball in for Steadman to finish. To the delight of all 4-2. We kept it strong at the back and maintained our composure to win the game and a place in the Wirral U18 final.

Last week before half term

Alright fellas, this week is massive for the 1st team with the big game against Neston on Wednesday night!! This being said we have a training session for the 1st team and 2nd team players at the Oval from 4-5pm with CCC.

The main reason for that i due to the fact that I have a knee operation tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday 21st Oct. Therefore i am not going to be able to make training and will be making every effort to be there on Wed aft at Neston Rec.

On Thursday, the U14's are playing at the Oval against St Anselms with a 4.15 start playing 25 mins each way. Mr Thomason will be looking after you guys. Good luck fellas!

Wirral U16's v St Anselms

A game of two halves one would say! This was a case if not turning up in the first half apart from a couple of corners and a goal pulled back by Clark and three of the worse goals i have ever seen conceded. The problems were sill errors, not passing to each other, poor ball pace, lack of vision and confidence.

At half time we spoke about things, increased our energy levels changed a few things about and got at St Anselms. They didn't like it and it made for a better second half. A second goal came as Wilkinson attacked down the right wing cutting in and beating 5 maybe 6 players at once and then squaring the ball for Farrington to guide home. We were back in the game and further chances fell but didn't materialise. A miles better effort in the second half.

Still some positives, but lots still to work on!! Keep things up lads.

On a cool, cloudy afternoon the Wirral 1st and 2nd XI teams went over the water to Liverpool and up to Crosby to play Merchant Taylor's School. On arriving there young Lyness showed his true colours with some funny smells!! This probably didn't help our start as we went behind to an early Merchants goal. This down to sloppy play and us not playing to our usual high tempo.

Without this pace and good passing we can at time make simple mistakes! Those mistakes often cost us. As the half developed the Merchants passing game and decisiveness told as they put together a second good move to go 2-0 up. We the started to battle and play some good hockey often illustrated by Bush and Harvey. A driving run by Bush saw him pick out Evans who finished with aplomb. Silly mistakes by Eastwood and Walker saw us behind 3-1 at half time.

Just reinforcement of what we are good at and to raise the intensity was Metcalf's words at half time, with a few changes. A goal for Cropper from close range and then an equaliser from Plimley saw us back in the game! But sustained pressure down our left his side saw the Merchants team grab a late winner to win the game 4-3. The man of the match performance was given by Hankie who was strong resilient and committed throughout. Nullifying the Merchants attacks and popping up in the opposing dee on numerous occasions only to find that the ball did not arrive to him. Well played!!

Had we taken the chances at short corners and played like we did in the second half throughout, I'm sure the second half would have been different. Still very encouraging and lets take that second half into the game against Neston next week!!

U15 V U14's Game!

In front of a bumper crowd in the end on a rain swept evening the junior teams fought out a well deserved 1-1 draw. Goals both coming in the first half through the impressing Quereshi and Edwards for the U14's. In a well balanced game the U15's came out strongly and moved the ball quickly applying a lot of pressure on the Year 9 goal only to find Cartwright up to his very best. He was also assisted by some very good defending and when the Year 9 goal came through a driving Wilkinson run, and Edward's finishing with aplomb, there was a sense of belief in their own ability.

The game was played in horrible conditions and every credit to all players that they made use of rolling substitutes throughout both half's. This both ensured that they gained a rest and also rotated positions! The second half saw both teams play with more confidence and look to hit the ball more and move the ball quickly from left to right. In the end resilient defending by the Year 9 team ensured that the Year 10 team didn't go home with the bragging rights!

Thank you fellas, I look forward to both teams making good progress this season.

The 1st XI and 2nd team along with some of the U16 boys have a game on Wednesday afternoon against Merchant Taylors School from Crosby. We are playing away and so will have to leave at 12.45 so that we are there for a 2pm start for the 1st team. The 2nd team to follow, the team will be posted tomorrow and placed on the Hockey board in the morning. We should be back at school for about half five on Wednesday. Watch out later in the week for the report from both games.

On Tuesday is the coaching game between the U14's (new breed) against the U15's (elder statesmen) starting at the Oval at 4.15.
On Thursday the U16's play their Cup fixture against St Anselms College at the Oval, 4.15 start.

Calday

The Calday week can always prove to be hard but the u16s put in a sterling effort going down 2-0. There is real progress being made by the group of lads and the influx of some u15 boys has helped to develop this group of players. Strong performances by Hayat, Eastwood and so nearly goals for Clegg and McCann may have seen a different score line!!

On the Wednesday afternoon, a young and inexperienced 2nd XI side played their heart out against a strong Calday 2nds that included about 5 players from the 1st team. We learnt some hard lessons that day and the mistakes made really showed. We lost by alot, 12-0!! This possibly only helped the 1st XI players to go out there and prove a point! We wiped the floor with Calday only to not score although Evans will tell you differently!! The 0-0 showed great character, commitment and effort and sets us p for a pulsating game against Neston on the 22nd Oct.

Sept matches

The first outing of the season saw the whole 1st and 2nd team squad play the St Anselm boys at the Oval. We made a promising start and played good hockey throughout, taking two good chances in a long 55 minute half. We were worthy winners winning
2-0.

The following week the boys were to play a 1stXI fixture against Neston at the Rec. Under the stewardship of CCC the boys put on a solid performance running out 4-1 winners with goals from Steadman, Evans, Bush and Riddiough. A great positive start to the season and lets holpe we can put the same kind of performance in against Neston in the Cup.

October 9th Training

A good session at the Oval with over 35 down at training. We looked at hitting and receiving the ball from different positions and then in different ways. We then added some pressure and then looked to apply it into our post up drill and attacking the 25 and then scoring past our two goalkeepers O'Connell and Cartwright. Things improved and as we moved things into a game their were signs of it working and us linking play together. Well Done!!

October 6th Week

We played Neston HS on Tuesday night at the Rec. The U16 team started brightly as usual stringing passes together and working hard both off the ball and then trying to win it back. Their efforts we rewarded when Jordan Edge deflected in a Max Eastwood cross from a short corner in the first 15 mins. Wirral then continued to keep possession and create opportunities.

But as the half developed Neston began to have a few fast breaks and seized their goalscoring chances with two short corners. One which the defenders just didn't deal with and the second that ricochet off Johnstone leg and into an empty net. All in all probably not deserved but tiredness had crept in and silly mistakes and constant shouts from AJM on don't run into trouble and pass to blue echoed around the Rec.

The second half started brightly and their were noticeable improvements with strong performances and good patterns of play, just no end product. The score remained 2-1 and we live to dream another dream in search of this win.

1st XI Training

All 1st XI / 2nd XI and U16players are encouraged to attend indoor training on Fridays in the sports hall. The competitive nature of indoor hockey enables the players to develop their basic skills, team play, and passing aswell as your fitness. The use of the Multi gym is also available boys. See you Friday.

3 v 2 Win

There was an element of de-ja vu on Wed as i dont think we were in control of the ball as Kings Chester took an very early lead following a slick move. The Kings side who had defeated Wirral before Christmas started well, but as the first half progressed, Wirral started to get a strong hold upon the match. Strong performances from Steadman, Drew and Oldham ensured that attacks were broken down and created. A goal from Mark Harries and Mike Taylor from a stroke ensured that Wirral got 2-1 infront and a Craig Graves goal ensured that Wirral got a well deserved win!!

10th Jan v Kings Macclesfield

3 v 1 Lost

This was a game all about the 2nd half for Wirral. The less said about the 1st half the better. A good individual goal from Luke Jarmay ensured that the boys came away from the game feeling better. Impressive games for Stuart Murray and Sam Harvey playing for Kings i might add was a plus for the day.

All 1st and 2nd XI hockey players, ensure that you go to the meeting about 6th form option changes, then meet in the Gymnasium for a meeting, run and games indoor.
All players must attend even without kit!!
